Sunday 19 May

Hi folks. Bad news I'm afraid.

My laryngitis is no better and now I have tonsil pain on top of that. I will be going back to the doctor tomorrow.

This means that I definitely won't be well enough to play at The Lamb, Marlborough on Friday 24th, or at Bar 35, Bude, on Saturday 25th, or Bath Fringe on Monday 27th.

I am very sorry to have to cancel more shows. This really is the most frustrating thing to have. But I still can't speak, let alone sing, so I have no option but to cancel, and continue to rest my voice.

Big love to you all.

Gaz

Monday 13 May

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I must inform you that I have had to pull out of this Saturday's gig at The Bank Tavern, Bristol.

I have laryngitis and I can't even talk, let alone sing. The doctor tells me that I need at least a week to rest it, and that pushing it sooner than that would only make it worse.

I am very sorry. You all know how much I love playing at The Bank. I will be rearranging it for another date as soon as possible.

Again, I am very sorry.

Gaz

Tuesday 7 May

I've just heard that my gig at The Unicorn, Little Dawley near Telford on Saturday May 17th has been cancelled. No explanation from venue. I am so sorry to everyone who was going to come. It always sucks when this happens. I'll sort another soon.

Monday 6 May

Each one of the first 100 are signed and numbered, so they are ultra special edition!

The bonus CD includes:

Sunday 10 March

BIG NEWS!

I'm supporting one of my all time favourite bands, The Ataris, at The Fleece, Bristol on Sunday April 7th. Facebook Event.

Its £14 a ticket, but I have some £10 ones, available to you guys. Just Paypal me the money for the tickets to gaz.brookfield@googlemail.com, include your address in the message, and I'll pop them in the post. Don't worry about postage costs, I'll pay for the stamp :)

This is going to be one hell of a show! Mike Merrara from MXPX is on the bill too, as are Versus The World, featuring members of The Ataris, and Lagwagon!

Any of my friends who know who these bands are will know why this is such an important gig for me. The Ataris, MXPX, Lagwagon et al are bands that have had some of the most profound effect on me and why I write songs in the first place.

To get to support them, is as exciting to me as it was to get to support The Levellers.

I realise that musically speaking they (Ataris/Levellers) are worlds apart, but The Ataris (and bands of a similar kind) were the bands that helped me through a really bad time time in my life, they got me writing songs to exorcise pain, they got me writing songs with 4 magic chords, an upbeat pace and catchy tunes, they got me writing songs...full stop. (Without The Ataris, I would never have written Sex Not You).

I know £10 is quite a lot to pay to see me, seeing as I'm on first, but if you like The Ataris and MXPX too, then you're laughing! If you don't know them, trust me, you'll like them! If you don't like them, you're wrong! Haha!

Hope you can make it.

Tuesday 12 February

Hi there

Sadly, today I have learned that this Saturday's gig at The Eden Cafe, St Austell has been cancelled.

I am very sorry to cause confusion. The venue decided that recent shows were poorly attended and they did not want to risk another night of live music and potential financial losses. Can't say I blame them, we live in difficult times.

I promise I will be back in the area soon.

Sorry again,

Gaz

DIET OF BANALITY SINGLE RELEASE PROBLEM

Hi everyone. I have debated long and hard about whether or not to tell this story, but I think that even if this makes me look really fucking unprofessional, total honesty is the best way to go.

About a week ago I was informed that the version of Diet Of Banality that I recorded for release today has a lyric in it that is defamatory. The lyric is "conning money out of kids". It was never intended to be defamatory, and is not a serious statement, it is merely a throwaway comment and not supposed to be taken seriously. I would hope that it comes under "fair comment" in legal terms, seeing as it is obviously not a statement of fact, it is just a joke. But as I do not want to be taken to court I decided to try and do something about it. (There is nothing I can do about the original version of the song on Trial and Error. That's out there. It's two years too late to do anything about that).

So I speedily re-recorded it with different lyrics, got it mastered, and sent it out to the various online music stores, in the hope that the version that I had already sent them, (the defamatory one) could be switched for this new one in time for the release date.

iTtunes have been brilliant, and have promised me that the new, non-defamatory version is the version that is available today. Let's hope that they actually do this. However, all of the other online stores are not being as helpful.

Therefore the version that is going to be released on all of the online stores apart from iTtunes, is the version that has the defamatory lyrics.

There is absolutely nothing I can do about this. It is a huge fuck up, but it is un-fixable at this time. Not having a record company backing me up means that I can't get through to the person on the phone that I need to, in order to fix this. It would seem that I'm just not important enough to deserve the attention of a human to speak to on the other end of the phone. I can't even get them to just not release it at all. I can't do anything if I can't speak to the relevant person on the phone.

So, just to be clear, the upshot of all of this is that, as of today, there will be two versions. iTunes will have the non-defamatory version (I hope), and all the other places will have the defamatory version. This is not the ideal situation by any means. The defamatory version will be changed on the other online stores eventually, I just can't do it in time for the release date because no one will answer the phone and help me fix this. I've done all I can to avoid this situation, but it's happened all the same.

I'm not saying that I don't want you to buy the version that is being released, I'm just letting you know why there are two different versions out there.

Sometimes being a DIY musician is brilliant. Sometimes I really wish I had a record company to help with shit like this. Whichever version you buy, I hope you like it. Fingers crossed I don't end up in court.

Thursday 13 December

It's back!

Here is the new version of Diet Of Banality, available for download from Itunes 16.12.12.

This new version has no mention of "that man" and therefore affords him no more publicity than he already has. Please share, and buy it on the 16th! Merry Christmas.

Friday 30 November

NEWS! I'll be supporting The Levellers on some more tour dates in 2013! June 12th at Cheltenham Town Hall, June 13th at Bedford Corn Exchange and June 15th at Yeovil Westlands.

Also, here's November's tour diary:

Sunday 25 November

Hello everyone.

So, It turns out that last week I ended up being taken on the latter half of The Levellers UK tour as the first support act. I played Bristol O2, Nottingham Rock City, Leeds O2, Birmingham O2, and Shepherd's Bush Empire. Venues that I have always dreamed of playing! It truly was the most amazing experience of my life to date, and I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has made this last week so special.

Thank you The Levellers (friendliest band on the planet!) and their awesome crew for making me feel so welcome. Thanks also to the Citizen Fish boys - a nicer group of dudes you'd be hard pressed to find.

Special thanks to you lovely people who watched me play, and especially those of you who bought my album.

I've had the most incredible time this week, and I hope to be back in all the wonderful cities that I've visited soon.

Thank you all.

Love (a very happy) Gaz

PS. In other news, the gig I was due to play in Swindon at The 12Bar on November 30th has been moved to another venue and I won't be playing now. It's a long story, and it's not at all interesting so I won't bore you with it. Suffice to say that I am not playing in Swindon this Friday. Sorry to all who were coming.

Sunday 18 November

I've got 4 more gigs with The Levellers coming up next week. Exact dates and stage times are on the Gigs page.

Saturday 10 November

I have 2 gigs with The Levellers coming up. Thursday 15 November at the O2 Academy, Bristol and Saturday 24 November at the O2 Shephard's Bush Empire, London. Tickets.

Also, here's October's tour diary:

Wednesday 10 October

Hi,

I know it's a bit soon to be mentioning the "C" word, but I am releasing a Christmas single!

I have decided to re-record Diet Of Banality from my first album and release it in direct competition to all the utter nonsense that passes for music at Christmas time. I think that this song perfectly sums up my, and a lot of other people's feelings about the manufactured music industry, and what better time to release it than when the industry is saturated with pop nonsense, that purely exists to generate money, not art.

It is a download-only single, and it will be available on Sunday 16 December 2012. It may not get in the charts, but then even if it doesn't, it kind of proves the point of the song anyway.

It will be available to download from iTunes, Amazon, and 7Digital and the links will be on the Buy page of this site. I realise that you cannot buy the single from here yet, because it only comes out on a week before Christmas and they won't let me take pre-orders (they've changed the rules).

So, please buy this song! Please tell your friends and family to buy this song! Even if they hate it, please get them to part with 79p, and help keep DIY music alive. Let's join together and collectively stick two fingers up to the manufactured music industry.

Let's get this song everywhere so that, come Christmas, everyone will buy it, and we can prove that it is still possible for music that exists for a reason other than generating cash for rich people, to get heard in this world!

Many thanks, and keep supporting DIY music!

Monday 9 August

If you'd like to be in the video for Be The Bigger Man, please read this, and share it about as much as you can.

Thanks,

Gaz.

I'd like to make a music video for Be The Bigger Man.

If you have been affected by bullying at any point in your life, I'd like YOU to be in it.

The video will comprise of lots of video clips that I hope you guys will film and send me.

What I'd like you to do is, using a webcam, camcorder, or decent quality mobile phone camera, film a short clip of yourself holding up 3 different pieces of A4 paper or card with some things written on them, one at a time.

The clips need to be of a decent enough quality to use in a video, but they don't have to be full HD or anything fancy like that.

What I'd like to write on the pieces of paper/card is the following:

Piece of paper/card 1: "Be The Bigger Man"

Piece of paper/card 2: Write a word or a few words that sum up your experience of bullying, for instance, "Bullied at school", or something like that.

Piece of paper/card 3: A word, or a few words that describe something positive about how you are now, having been through bullying, such as, "Strong", or "Happy", or something like that.

The over riding message in the song is one of positivity and saying that there is life after bullying, so that is what I'd like you guys to help me convey.

YOUR VIDEO CLIPS NEED TO BE SENT TO ME BY THE 1ST AUGUST 2012 PLEASE!!!

I'm hoping to involve one or more anti bullying charities in this video and so we'll see where it will end up.

Here's a short video to give you an idea of what I'm after.

Please email your video clips to gaz.brookfield@googlemail.com.

I hope that you can help, and please pass this message on to anyone else you know who you think might be up for getting involved.

Thanks

Gaz

MASSIVE LONDON DATE ANNOUNCED!

My good friend Shaun has asked me to support his band, Buswell, at Union Chapel, Islington on Friday 14 September 2012.

Obviously I said, "Hell yes!!!".

I will be first support at this gig, meaning that I will be on early, probably at about 7pm. Then there will be the other support act, Cook And The Case, and then the mighty Buswell.

Below is the Facebook event for this gig. Please check out the other acts, and see what Buswell's 121212 challenge is all about too.

I don't often play in London, so this this is a bit of a rarity. This will also be such a special night, as Union Chapel is one of those venues that every musician would like to play at some point in their career.

I really hope that you can make it to this one, and share this special event with us.
